Sprint dial up internet service reminder

If you have a Sprint dialup account, remember that YOU are responsible for assuring that you are making calls at minimum cost to yourself and to NLU.

Keeping NLU costs to a minimum:

1st, seek a number that appears as "Sprint" in the dialup's telephone directory. This is the least expensive to NLU. Your account includes a flat rate for the month for 150 hours of usage of these numbers.

2nd, if there is no local number labeled "Sprint", then choose a number labeled "roaming". This adds costs to NLU - we are now charged $2.60/hr for every hour you use the system.

3rd, if there are no "Sprint" or "roaming" numbers listed, then choose the 800 number. This doubles the cost to NLU - we now pay $5.20/hr for use of these numbers.

REGARDLESS of the number that you use, HANGUP when you are through using the system. Do NOT let the modem stay connected all day or all night. If you do so, you are wasting money that NLU could put to much better use.

Clarification: in this system, the term "roaming" denotes a number that Sprint charges NLU more to use. It does not affect what you pay to dial that number.

Keeping YOUR costs to a minimum:

Remember - especially in the Chicago area- that the telephone company decides what is a "local" or "local toll" call based on the DISTANCE between you and the number you called.

  1. Launch the Sprint dialup program.

  2. Select the state and city closest to you.

  3. Look through the list of available numbers for ones that are in your area code and exchange. Start with numbers listed as "Sprint".

  4. Write down those numbers, then contact your local telephone company. You may call SBC at 800.244.4444 to ask the question "is this a local call from my number"?

  5. If the number is local, then use it. If it is listed as a toll call, then select another number; keep going until you find a local number.

  6. If you cannot find any local number, then contact the Helpdesk. Although we are not always successful, sometimes we can convince Sprint to add numbers. In the meantime (as a last resort) use the expensive 800 number.

Assuring that you are dialing a local number is important to your personal bank account - the telephone charges incurred to access the Sprint internet service connection are your responsibility (as is the case with all internet service providers).

Sprint Dialup Eligibility: NLU faculty or staff who can demonstrate an NLU business need to connect to NLU technology resources from off campus may request an NLU- paid "dial up" account. These are 56 kbps connections that use a telephone modem, not high speed DSL or cable modem lines. An application form is on the OIT web site.
