Increased Bandwidth (= Network Speed) for the Chicago Campus Coming Soon
Over the past 6 to 12 months, the network usage at the Chicago campus increased to exceed the capacity of the connection between the Chicago and Wheeling campuses. This creates painfully slow response times and occasional disconnects when working with any application that resides at Wheeling: Banner, Email, Network storage, NLU web sites, Citrix, etc. In order to improve the situation we are installing an additional line and doubling the bandwidth to the Chicago Campus.
We will need to take down the network connection for Chicago while the upgrade is performed. We will schedule this during a time of minimal impact to the users at the Chicago campus and notify all users via OIT Announcement when a firm date for installation is determined. [We expect the outside vendors to have everything ready within a month.]
This network improvement is the first in an effort to improve speed to all campuses. We are developing plans to transition to a new Internet provider in the summer to fall time frame - assuming that we can demonstrate the transition will be cost effective, as there are significant transition costs. Future network improvements will be made [assuming funding is available] as part of the necessary preparations for more online services for students, improvements in the video network and to accommodate the increased usage of network applications. These are all on the roadmap to the NLU information highway in the next 1-3 years. |
