Banner Web System Status
The Administrative Systems team upgraded Banner from version 4.x to 5.x starting Wednesday evening. Most of the changes to Version 5.x are “behind the scenes” improvements and fixes.
Banner vs. 5.x is now available for use. Here is what to expect:
- TO BE CERTAIN THAT YOU ARE LOGGING IN TO THE NEW VERSION - if you did not log off or shutdown your computer over the weekend, do so now- do a complete shutdown and reboot of your PC in order to be certain that you have the correct “NLDB” icon on your desktop.
- The correct Banner icon is still labeled “NLDB” but it does NOT have a yellow “lightning bolt” nor a blue arrow - instead it is blue with a series of white stripes.
- NO changes to the login procedure or to passwords.
- NO changes to the basic mechanisms of running reports or processes.
- A FEW changes to the ways certain forms appear on your screen- the placement of a field may be different or some new fields may appear on a screen.
- Banner “Web for…” products are not fully operational. Working out these problems will be a high priority for the Tech staff.
If you experience any problems with Banner, please do not wait - call your normal support contact immediately so that we can resolve the problems as soon as possible. If you are unsure whom to call, contact the Helpdesk at x4357
The Banner upgrade process is always a difficult and time-consuming one. Its success depends on the cooperative efforts of dozens on people. Thanks to:
- The numerous key users who tested the upgrade during the least several weeks.
- The department managers and staff who planned for and managed the challenges of maintaining operations while the system was unavailable for 2 business and 2 weekend days.
- The Administrative Systems team - Leslie McKinzie, Diane Horner, Eric Vuillemot, Patrick Weathersby, Andy Welenc, Chad Boersema and Derek Pilch - who collectively planned, made the behind the scenes technical adjustments to their systems, worked through the bugs, and assisted the users with testing and debugging, etc.
- AND SPECIAL THANKS to our Database Administrator (DBA), Akovi Wilson for his week of literally round-the-clock day and night work. The DBA plays the key, central role in Banner upgrades. He has the responsibility for loading every one of the (hundreds of) upgrades, making all of the database adjustments, and fixing the most complex problems that are part of the upgrade process. His dedication to getting the job done as quickly as possible allowed us to have the system down for only 2 business days, rather than 4 or more that it might otherwise have taken to load all of the upgrades needed to bring us up to the current Banner releases in each module.
